Awkward Table Visits? a real question

Just a general question comes to mind and has nothing to do with recent experiences that I may or may not have lived through: Restaurants owners and chefs tickle patrons fancies when they visit their tables and ask about their meals, right? (Am I the only one sliding off my chair?!) But when they are the most awkward people on the planet picking up on no social cues- do the table visits hinder or enhance the dining experience?
